5.10. SALVAGE
(a) In case where any salvage service is required for the vessel, the Master should, as far as possible safely and time permitting, contact the Company for assistance and instructions. However, if the vessel is in imminent danger, the Master shall ensure that salvage service is obtained using LOF.
(b) During a salvage operation, the following information should be noted and later passed on to the Company / Underwriters' representative:
- Terms & progress of the refloating/salvage operations.
- The number of tugs taking part, where they were positioned, and their efficiency.
- Weather conditions, tide, sea, etc.
- Nature of any risk undertaken by the Salvers and any damages suffered by them.
(c) These documents may be used as the basis of establishing the danger to which the vessel was exposed, and thereby the salvage amount. Unnecessarily emphasizing danger to the own vessel can only damage the company/underwriters’ interest.
(d) It must be remembered that any salvage or refloating operation may be General Average, and hence cargo should not be released until cargo receivers have signed Average Bonds.
(e) Time and place for the possible holding of Maritime Declaration should be decided with the consent of the company.
(f) The Company shall advise as to salvage contracts, lightering, port of refuge, discharging, repairs, etc.
(g) Always remember that the Master is responsible for the safety of the vessel and is free to act on the basis of the assessment of the situation.
(h) Following should be available on board:
- Peril at Sea and Salvage - A Guide for Masters by ICS.
- LOF 2020 Lloyd's Standard Form of Salvage Agreement to be available at Bridge.
